Indigenous Peoples Month

The National Indigenous Peoples Month in 2024, themed “Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge”, highlights the contributions and rights of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in the Philippines. The observance promotes awareness of their unique cultures and traditions through festivals, exhibitions, and dialogues, such as the Dayaw Festival, which showcases the diverse heritage of Indigenous communities. This celebration aligns with the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Act (IPRA), which ensures the protection of their lands, cultural integrity, and self-determination.

By involving local and national stakeholders, the month encourages collaboration in addressing IPs' challenges, including land disputes and limited representation. Programs under the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) help communities secure ancestral land titles and advocate for their needs through mandatory representation in governance, reinforcing their role in sustainable environmental stewardship.
